What are Lapghans? Lapghans are lap sized afghans or quilts that when sitting down go from your waist to your toes. When one is not able to ambulate very well, they tend to get cold at times and these are a perfect solution for when laying down to take a nap or sitting around watching television.
Which would you recommend - afghans or quilts? The majority of the Veterans prefer the quilt lapghans because they are warmer and are used year round. However, it does not matter if it is crotched or sewn, they are ALL appreciated!
What colors do you recommend? Most of the Veterans in our Program are men and therefore we suggest using those more suited for men. Americana colors are preferred so that they can be used for both men and women, especially our injured.
What is so special about Operation Warm & Fuzzies and how long have you been doing it? Operation Warm & Fuzzies was started 4 years ago as a special project specifically geared for the Christmas Holidays. Many of our Veterans are alone with no family and friends and the only gift they will have to open is a 'Lapghan'.
How do I become a Lapghan Angel? You can email us here - don't forget to include your name and a telephone number where we can reach you. This gives us an idea of who is participating and allows us the opportunity to communicate with you about the project and how it is progressing.
When should we send the lapghans to you? Because we do a lot of travelling and visiting various facilities, lapghans will be delivered during those visits - please feel free to send them any time during the year! Lapghans can be mailed to:

How many should I make? As many as your heart desires! They are ALL needed and deeply appreciated!
Can I get my community or Organization involved? YES! Last year we had sewing groups, ladies auxillaries, church organizations, just to name a few.
Will I be reimbursed for my material or shipping expenses? Unfortunately not. We are a non-profit Organization with no incoming revenue. We do suggest posting at other forums and in your community the need for material and shipping costs. You would be surprised at the number of people who cannot participate but are happy to donate so that you can.
I have used quilts and afghans. Can I donate these? As much as we would love to have them, no. It's important to remember that for many these lapghans may be the only 'new' thing they receive throughout the year..
Special Requests:
If you are a smoker, we ask that you please hand wash these prior to shipping them. Many of our Veterans are from the Vietnam era and because of their exposure to Agent Orange, they now have breathing problems. Cigarette smoke or intense fabric softener can aggravate the problem.
If at all possible, we ask that you sew a small tag somewhere on the lapghan so that the Veterans name can be written on that tag. This ensures that they will not get lost once they are washed.
